Diplomatic Maneuvers Intensify as War and Negotiations Collide Over Ukraine
Fresh diplomatic momentum has emerged as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed he will meet US President Donald Trump in Florida, seeking progress on ending Russia’s prolonged full-scale invasion.
The meeting follows weeks of negotiations around a US-brokered peace plan, which Zelensky says is nearly complete and focuses heavily on security guarantees and economic arrangements.
At the same time, violence continues on the ground, with Russian air strikes reported in Kyiv and Kharkiv, killing and injuring civilians and forcing residents into shelters.
Ukraine has proposed the creation of a demilitarised zone in eastern areas, suggesting troop withdrawals of up to 40 kilometres if Russia agrees to do the same.
These proposals aim to avoid resolving immediate questions of legal sovereignty in Donbas, while creating a free economic zone to stabilise regions not fully occupied by Russian forces.
Russia currently controls most of Donetsk and nearly all of Luhansk, but Kremlin officials have criticised the US plan as fundamentally different from their own negotiations with Washington.
Senior Russian figures have warned that Ukraine must withdraw completely from Donbas or face continued military pressure, dismissing territorial compromises as unacceptable.
Trump has publicly stated that no final agreement will move forward without his approval, while expressing optimism about his relationships with both Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.
Zelensky, however, has highlighted progress, noting that updated proposals include strong US and European security guarantees modelled on Nato’s collective defence principle.
