Mexico City Officials Killed in Targeted Motorcycle Shooting Amid Political Violence Surge

Two key aides to Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada were fatally shot on Tuesday in a targeted motorcycle attack in the Moderna neighborhood, raising alarm over political violence. The victims were Ximena Guzmán and José Muñoz.

The attack took place between Calzada de Tlalpan and Napoleón Street, a typically busy area where the officials were intercepted while traveling to work. Gunmen on a motorcycle carried out the deadly assault.

Crime scene footage revealed the vehicle with numerous bullet holes in its windshield. Forensic teams quickly examined the scene as police reviewed surveillance footage in hopes of identifying the assailants.

Mayor Brugada expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Guzmán and Muñoz, describing them as dedicated public servants. She emphasized the personal and professional impact of the tragedy on her administration.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, a political ally of Brugada from the Morena party, offered condolences and pledged full cooperation in the investigation. She assured the public that justice would be pursued.

Sheinbaum noted that both victims had been long-time members of Morena and had contributed significantly to its political efforts. Their deaths represent a significant loss for the party and the city government.

The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office labeled the incident a direct, targeted attack. Authorities are actively investigating potential political motives but have yet to release definitive findings or suspects.

This attack fits into a disturbing national pattern of violence against political figures. Data Cívica reported 661 attacks on politicians and political institutions in 2023, marking an unprecedented surge in political violence.

Several assassinations of mayors and candidates occurred earlier this year, including those in Guerrero, Michoacán, and Veracruz. These killings have heightened public concern and drawn attention to the risks faced by politicians.

The deaths of Guzmán and Muñoz have intensified calls for stronger protection measures for public officials and greater accountability. Citizens demand swift action to address the escalating political violence threatening Mexico’s democracy.
