Suspicious Suitcases: 160 Kg of Protected Hermit Crabs Seized from Chinese Tourists in Japan
Japanese authorities have detained three Chinese nationals after uncovering an astonishing 160 kilograms of live hermit crabs hidden inside multiple suitcases on Amami Oshima Island. The individuals, aged 24 to 27, were identified as Liao Zhibin, Song Zhenhao, and Guo Jiawei.
The bizarre discovery began when hotel staff in Amami became suspicious of the travelers' behavior. They had requested that several suitcases be watched over, but unusual rustling sounds soon drew concern. This prompted the employee to report the matter to local environmental authorities.
Upon inspection by law enforcement, the suitcases were found to be packed with protected hermit crabs, a violation of Japan’s stringent conservation laws. A total of six pieces of luggage were seized, all containing the live creatures, which are considered a national treasure.
When the tourists returned to collect their bags, they were promptly arrested. None of the three could produce permits or legal documents authorizing the possession of the animals. The arrest took place on a Wednesday, according to police sources.
Authorities have yet to determine the suspects' intentions with the crabs. It is still unknown whether the men planned to sell them or had other uses in mind. Investigations are continuing, with officials probing possible links to illegal wildlife trade networks.
These hermit crabs are designated as national natural monuments in Japan due to their ecological and cultural importance. Their removal from natural habitats without authorization is strictly prohibited under national law to preserve biodiversity.
The Amami Islands, located close to Okinawa, are recognized for their rich ecosystems and rare species. Environmental officials have reiterated the significance of complying with wildlife protection laws to help maintain the delicate balance of the island’s environment.
