Gaza Hospitals Crumble Amid Fierce Israeli Assault and Stalled Ceasefire Talks

The Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza is under siege by Israeli forces, the Hamas-run health ministry reports. Heavy fire is blocking access for medical staff, patients, and crucial supplies, further deepening the humanitarian crisis in the area.

Israel’s military announced a large-scale offensive called “Operation Gideon’s Chariots,” focusing on northern Gaza. Their stated goal is to dismantle Hamas’s operational sites, including areas near the besieged Indonesian Hospital. This ground assault follows weeks of heavy airstrikes.

The Gaza health ministry has reported a death toll of at least 67 and over 360 injuries in just 24 hours. It also confirmed that three hospitals in the northern governorate are out of commission, highlighting a worsening healthcare emergency.

Dr. Mohammed Salha, director of al-Awda private hospital, told the BBC that his hospital relies on the Indonesian Hospital for oxygen and intensive care supplies. The closure of the Indonesian Hospital severely restricts al-Awda’s ability to treat critical patients.

Al-Awda Hospital itself sustained damage from an overnight bombing, forcing staff to divide their efforts between repairing the facility and providing urgent medical care. The compounded attacks are straining the already overwhelmed healthcare workers in Gaza.

Israeli airstrikes recently targeted two major hospitals in Khan Younis—the Nasser Medical Complex and European Hospital. The Israeli military claimed that Hamas had embedded a command post beneath the European Hospital, justifying a precise strike on militants hiding below.

Reports in Israeli media identified Mohammed Sinwar, a senior Hamas leader and brother of former Gaza head Yahya Sinwar, as a target of the strikes. The northern Gaza towns of Beit Lahia and Jabalia refugee camp were also bombed, escalating destruction.

Since the collapse of a two-month ceasefire in mid-March, thousands have been killed as Israel continues its campaign to defeat Hamas and free hostages. Meanwhile, humanitarian groups warn Gaza’s 2.1 million residents face starvation due to a blockade on food and aid.

Indirect ceasefire talks took place in Qatar, with Hamas offering a 60-day truce and the release of nine hostages. Israel demanded proof of life for all hostages and refused to withdraw troops, signaling a continued stalemate with no end in sight.
