Dubai Sets Crypto Precedent with Public Sector Payment Deal

Dubai is making headlines in the fintech world again by permitting the use of cryptocurrencies for paying government fees, thanks to a new deal between the Department of Finance and Crypto.com.

The agreement, formalized at the Dubai FinTech Summit, includes the participation of Crypto.com UAE president Mohammed Al Hakim and top financial officials. It signals growing support for blockchain in governance.

Once live, the system will let both individuals and companies pay fees through Crypto.com’s digital wallet, expanding the functionality and reach of cryptocurrency in public financial dealings.

The payments will be converted instantly into dirhams before being deposited into Dubai Finance accounts, thereby maintaining the integrity and traceability required for government accounting practices.

Daily services such as utility bills and public parking will be the first areas to benefit, creating an easy on-ramp for residents familiar with crypto usage in private settings.

The strategy aligns with the city’s vision for a cashless society by 2026, aimed at streamlining public services and enhancing accessibility to various segments of the population.

Calling it a groundbreaking effort, Al Hakim emphasized Dubai’s leadership role in integrating crypto into mainstream use cases, potentially serving as a model for other cities globally.
