Ex-Ukrainian Politician Andriy Portnov Murdered Near Madrid School
Andriy Portnov, former deputy head of ex-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych’s administration, was assassinated near the American School of Madrid. The shooting shocked both Spanish and Ukrainian communities alike.
The 51-year-old lawyer was attacked at around 9:15 a.m. local time, shot multiple times in the back and head while entering his vehicle. His assailants then escaped into a wooded area nearby.
Authorities quickly secured the area around the elite Pozuelo de Alarcon school, home to over 1,000 students from the U.S., Spain, and other nations. The school confirmed all students were safe following the attack.
Portnov was known for his close ties to Yanukovych and had fled Ukraine after the 2014 pro-democracy uprising that toppled the pro-Russian leader. He later returned briefly in 2019 but remained a controversial figure.
The U.S. sanctioned Portnov under the Magnitsky Act in 2021, accusing him of corruption and judicial interference that hindered Ukrainian reforms. Canada froze his assets in 2014 due to similar corruption concerns.
Despite a petition by Ukrainian media and civil society in late 2024 urging sanctions against Portnov, Ukraine’s government declined, citing insufficient grounds. Allegations included harassment of journalists and leaking their personal information.
Portnov held significant posts, including head of Ukraine’s judicial reform department and membership on the National Bank board. Yanukovych’s pivot away from the EU towards Russia triggered protests, leading to Yanukovych’s exile to Russia.
The assassination echoes earlier killings of Yanukovych allies in Ukraine, with suspicious deaths of political figures close to the former president raising fears of political vendettas and unresolved violence.
Spain has also seen violence related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, including attacks on the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid and letter bombs targeting officials. A suspect was arrested for attempting to intimidate Spain into dropping support for Ukraine.
Portnov’s murder is a grim reminder of the far-reaching impact of Ukrainian political conflicts, even on foreign soil. Investigations are underway to uncover the motive and track down those responsible.
