Xabi Alonso Named Real Madrid Manager, Signing Three-Year Deal
Real Madrid has officially named Xabi Alonso as their new manager, agreeing on a contract that will keep him at the club until June 2028. Alonso, a former midfielder who played 236 games for the club, returns in a new leadership role.
Earlier this month, Alonso announced he would step down as Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach at the conclusion of this season, opening the door for his move back to Spain.
Alonso follows in the footsteps of Carlo Ancelotti, who managed Real Madrid until last weekend before taking over as Brazil’s national team coach. Ancelotti’s final match in charge was on Saturday.
At 43 years old, Alonso brings a blend of playing experience and coaching success. He was part of Real Madrid’s Champions League-winning squad in 2014 and has been building his managerial reputation since.
His first full season as Leverkusen’s manager was remarkable, leading the team to an undefeated Bundesliga title and winning the German Cup. However, Leverkusen finished second behind Bayern Munich this season.
Ancelotti praised Alonso as “one of the best in the world,” expressing his confidence in Alonso’s ability to guide the club forward.
The new manager will be formally introduced at Real Madrid’s training facility this Monday, where expectations are high for his impact.
Alonso’s football philosophy emphasizes control, tactical intelligence, and team cohesion, fitting well with Real Madrid’s style and ambitions.
Following Alonso’s departure, former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly close to a deal to take over at Leverkusen.
With deep ties to Real Madrid and a promising coaching career, Alonso is poised to steer the club towards continued success in the coming years.
