Man Sleeps Through Container Ship Accident Right Outside His Home in Norway

A remarkable incident unfolded in Byneset, Norway, when Johan Helberg slept through a massive container ship grounding itself on his front lawn. The 135-meter NCL Salten came to rest just meters from his house along Trondheim Fjord, only revealed to him when a neighbor alerted him early Thursday morning. Helberg was stunned to discover the enormous vessel parked so close to his home.

Helberg’s neighbor, Jostein Jørgensen, who lives about 40 meters from the beach, was woken at around 5 a.m. by the approaching noise of a ship. Peering outside, he saw the container ship rapidly approaching the shoreline. Concerned, he ran outside to raise the alarm, but the vessel had already grounded roughly eight meters from Helberg’s house before any action could be taken.

The ship narrowly avoided disaster by missing a nearby rocky outcrop, which could have caused it to crash directly into Helberg’s home. Helberg told TV2 Norway that had the ship hit that outcrop, it might have lifted and slammed hard against his house. Fortunately, only minor damage to the heating system’s electrical wiring was reported, leaving the home largely intact.

The NCL Salten was en route to Orkanger, with 16 crew members on board when the grounding happened. Bente Hetland, managing director of North Sea Container Line, called the event a “serious incident” and expressed gratitude that no injuries occurred. She noted that an investigation is ongoing to determine the incident’s cause.

Investigations revealed that the officer on watch, a Ukrainian crew member, had fallen asleep at the helm, leading to charges of negligent navigation. Authorities are assessing whether fatigue or violation of maritime rest rules contributed to the incident, highlighting concerns over crew welfare on long voyages.

Attempts to refloat the vessel have so far been unsuccessful. An initial tugboat effort failed, followed by a salvage team’s attempt during high tide, which was later called off. The Norwegian Coastal Administration announced that further geotechnical studies are needed before any new salvage operations can proceed.

Although no oil leakage has been detected, an oil spill response vessel is on standby as a precaution. The unusual event has captured public attention across Norway, with many amazed that such a colossal accident occurred so close to a private residence—and that Helberg slept through it all without waking.
