Tragic Sailboat Collision at Brooklyn Bridge Leaves Two Dead, Many Hurt
A Mexican Navy sailboat carrying 277 passengers collided with the Brooklyn Bridge Saturday evening, resulting in two fatalities and injuring more than a dozen others. The crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. near New York City's bustling waterfront.
The New York Police Department reported at least 19 injured individuals, including four with serious wounds. City officials later confirmed that two people died, while two remained in critical condition following the incident, as shared by Mayor Eric Adams.
According to NYPD Chief Wilson Aramboles, the vessel lost power and mechanical control, causing it to drift uncontrollably into one of the Brooklyn Bridge’s massive pillars. The collision struck a part of the ship where several sailors were stationed, resulting in their injuries.
Witnesses nearby captured cellphone footage showing the ship’s illuminated masts hitting the underside of the bridge, with some crew members dangling from the rigging after the impact. Miraculously, no one fell into the East River during the event.
The Brooklyn Bridge was briefly closed as officials conducted safety inspections. After preliminary assessments, Mayor Adams announced the bridge sustained no structural damage and was reopened to traffic just after midnight.
The National Transportation Safety Board arrived on site to investigate the accident. Early indications suggest mechanical failure aboard the sailboat, but investigators will conduct a thorough review of all factors contributing to the crash.
Emergency responders acted swiftly to assist those injured by the collision. Those hurt when the ship’s mast struck the bridge pillar received immediate medical attention, with severely injured passengers transported to local hospitals.
Mayor Adams expressed sympathy to the families of the victims and praised the heroic efforts of first responders. He reiterated the city’s commitment to support those affected and to enhance maritime safety protocols in the future.
